A Gema Hassen-Bey nunca le gustaron los cuentos de princesas, siempre prefirió los de aventuras y si la protagonista era una heroína con espada, mejor aún. Gladiadoras, walkirias o piratas femeninas fueron su inspiración.
Años después, ella también cogería una espada -literal- y protagonizaría su propia aventura, la de una niña a la que, con 4 años, un accidente de tráfico privó para siempre de la movilidad de sus piernas pero que, sobre una silla de ruedas, se convirtió en la mejor esgrimista paralímpica española de la historia.

«No quiero que la silla que use para subir al Kilimanjaro se quede en un prototipo, quiero que se pueda comercializar a bajo coste»
Fue la pionera de este deporte en nuestro país y participó en cinco Juegos Paralímpicos consecutivos (Atlanta, Barcelona, Sidney, Atenas y Pekín) donde obtuvo dos medallas de bronce. Como esas heroínas a las que tanto admiraba durante su infancia, Gema convirtió la espada, y también el florete, en sus mejores compañeras de viaje.
Su próxima aventura es la más ambiciosa de todas: convertirse en la primera mujer en silla de ruedas en subir al Kilimanjaro, el techo de África, a 5.895 metros de altura. Y lo hará acompañada de un equipo de 15 personas, entre los que se encuentra otra exdeportista: Carlota Castrejana.

Un reto con fines sociales
«Cuando me lo planteó Sebastián Cebrián pensé que estaba loco pero luego, estando en el hospital, valoré que un reto así me daría la oportunidad de conseguir una serie de beneficios sociales para muchas personas», explica.
Para empezar, Gema necesita una silla de ruedas especial para el ascenso. «No quiero que esa silla se quede en un prototipo, quiero que se pueda comercializar a bajo coste para que otras personas puedan moverse mejor en medios rurales o para gente con silla que quiera subir a la montaña de vez en cuando», dice.

«Donde hay un obstáculo yo veo una oportunidad»
La silla es uno de los obstáculos; el otro, la ropa térmica. «Tengo dos problemas: la circulación, que hace que no entren en calor mis piernas, y la sensibilidad. Hay parches que dan calor pero son peligrosos para mí porque al no tener sensibilidad podría quemarme. Pero donde hay un obstáculo yo veo una oportunidad para que alguna empresa de tecnología y textil desarrolle esa prenda y, gracias a ello, le quite el frío a mucha gente después».
Más duro que unos Juegos
Ha empezado a prepararlo en el gimnasio y con una bicicleta fabricada con unos amigos «porque la handbike es cara». Y poco a poco, irá subiendo pequeñas cimas para aclimatarse a la altura.
Ahora compagina los entrenamientos con las sesiones de rehabilitación del hombro, ya que tuvo que pasar por quirófano hace unos meses. Quizás por eso no quiere poner una fecha para hacer cumbre. «Este es el reto de retos. Es como preparar unos Juegos pero aquí no me juego una medalla, me juego la vida y tengo que prepararlo mejor».
«Este reto no va de una súper atleta que quiere subir a una súper montaña, sino de una persona frágil que quiere ayudar a la gente a subir su propia cima». Ella lo hará, cómo no, junto a su espada.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I loved Mint when I first tried it, however, after about 2-3 sync cycles with my financial institution it just stopped updating.
